Burgoyne’s Road is that section of the road which connects Impington and Milton between New Road, which goes down past the Village College, and the Milton end of Clay Close Lane. It’s a wicked succession of bends, it’s narrow and there are no continuous pavements. There have been many accidents on this stretch of road but thankfully there have been no serious injuries or fatalities. There’s a 30mph speed limit but even 30 mph is too fast and it’s just a matter of time before there is a really bad accident.
Safety is most important but this road is also used by HCVs. There’s the school buses from Milton (more on that below) and then there are HCVs using the road as a short cut, missing out the A14, and some of these come from the waste site at the Milton end of this road when it has become Butt Lane. The wall to the church is evidence that the road is not suitable for such traffic and it’s high time that it had an HCV restriction.
Burgoynes’ Road is the last but of the road which students from Milton must use if they are cycling to school. It’s not safe. And with the county having access to more funds for cycle paths we need to be very careful that a cycle path along a stretch of Butt Lane isn’t regarded as reason to withdraw the school bus that plies the route. OK the precedent of the Girton bus means that this would no be unlikely in which case we should be wary of wasting money on some sort of compromise route which would satisfy no-one.
