The B1049 starts north of Cottenham in Willburton. It doesn’t seem to feature any further north. It heads south towards Cottenham across what local people might call ‘fens’. Cottenham is after all a ‘fen edge’ village.
Entry to the village comes via a give way feature just before a double bend past the church into High Street. High Street in Cottenham is reputed to be the longest village main street in the UK.
There’s a right angle turn at the top of the village and another down by the Co-Op and between them what might have been a busy market street early in the last century.
Then it’s past the Village College on the left and The Green on the right before what is unfortunately a race out of the village along Histon Road.
The entry to Histon is also high speed allowed by a 40mph speed limit all the way through the village past the lights at The Green and along another race track when Histon becomes Impington. Then it’s over the railway bridge past Histon FC (in Impington!) and down to the Cambridge Road lights by the Holiday Inn.
Finally the B1049 climbs to the A14 junction and then descends on the other side before getting lost in the City and losing its short lived identity. And let’s not forget that before it hits the City there’s still a stretch in Impington south of the A14.
